The Curriculum at Mount Carmel RC Primary School
The curriculum at Mount Carmel has been specifically tailored to meet the context of our school. It is designed to be broad and balanced, providing all pupils with the opportunity to master their learning, deepen their knowledge, feed their curiosity and enable them to put their faith into action and face the world of tomorrow confidently.
We have identified five curriculum drivers which shape our curriculum and are derived from our vision and values, the backgrounds of our children and the community, and our beliefs about delivering a high quality education that equips every child with the tools to enter the world.
Our Curriculum Drivers
Driver 1: Good Communication
Our children need to be able to speak and listen with respect in a variety of situations.
Driver 2: Healthy Lifestyles
Throughout their lives our children will face many difficult challenges. They need to have the mental and physical strength to be successful and happy. Our children will need to be resilient and be able to make positive choices which benefit their wellbeing.
Driver 3: Sound Knowledge
In order to succeed our children, need access to a broad and balanced curriculum that gives them the knowledge and skills that enable them to be successful and happy lifelong learners.
Driver 4: Lifelong Aspirations
We want our children to have the hope, desire and ambition to strive to achieve their potential. To be the best they can possibly be.
Driver 5: A Deepening Faith Life
Following our Jesuit values enables our children to be agents of change in their own community and in the wider world.
Curriculum breadth is ensured by following the National Curriculum, the EYFS Statutory Framework, the Catholic Primary Religious Education Curriculum Directory and is further shaped by our curriculum drivers.
In each subject, knowledge and skills have been carefully sequenced and key strands of learning are taught and revisited so that children know and remember more. Curriculum maps for each subject and year group exemplify how coverage is achieved and how knowledge is secured across the school. Reading is essential in all parts of the curriculum and opportunities are provided for pupils to enjoy subject specific texts.
Our curriculum is underpinned by a range of enrichment activities including trips, visitors into school, thematic days/weeks, focussed projects and extra-curricular activities.
The curriculum is monitored, evaluated and reviewed by the Senior Leadership Team and subject leaders. Through this process the curriculum is adapted when needed to drive self-improvement.
Any questions you have about the curriculum can be addressed by class teachers or a member of the Senior Leadership Team. Curriculum map for each year group can be found below. More detailed overviews can be found in subject maps on our website.
