Reception L (Owl Class) 2026 - 2027

Welcome to Reception L - Owl class

Welcome to Reception L where a love of learning is at the heart of everything we do. The teacher in our classroom is Mrs Lowe and the teaching assistants are: Mrs Ford, Mrs McGuinness, Mrs Borg-Fenech, Miss Wroblewska and Miss McDonald. 

In the EYFS we challenge children to become independent learners and critcial thinkers through our continuous provision and targeted learning challenges. We are very excited to share all the amazing things we do in school with you. Please check out our page for regular updates and photos. 

Dedicated story time

In Reception we encourage a love of reading. Each day we have dedicated story time where we read one of our favourite five texts selected for the half term. Children will vote for an end of day story each morning that they want to hear at the end of each day.

Lending Library

Your child will be able to choose a book from our lending library that they can share with you at home. This is a book to read for pleasure. Please read with your child every night to help build a love for learning. 

Reading Books

You will be able to access a book on your child's Collins Ebook account. This book will also be shared in your child's guided reading session twice a week, developiong their fluency and comprehension. Your child will also be sent an additional book that will be matched at their phonetic ability that they can read at home with you. Each time you read, please sign your child's reading record. 

Owl of the Week

Every Friday a child is chosen to take our class toy Ollie the owl home for the weekend. We encourage parents to take photos of what your child and Ollie have been doing over the weekend and add them to his adventure book. Before his next adventure your child will share with the class what they have done with Ollie. 

Characteristics of Effective Learning

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, the Characteristics of Effective Learning describe how children learn rather than what they learn. The frameowrj outlines three core areas: Playing and Exploring (engagement), Active Learning (motivation), and Creating and Thinking Critically (thinking).

Each week a child will take home one of our Characteristic Dinosaurs; Explorosaurus, Thinkosaurus or Tryosaurus.

Class Saint

Our Class Saint is St. Joseph. He was the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus. St Joseph was a carpenter or woodworker. The Gospel of Matthew calls him a “righteous man,” meaning he was an observant Jew who obeyed God's law. On St Joseph's feast day the children in Reception will dress up as people who help us in our community.
