Mosaic Art

Year 3 have had a wonderfully creative week as we completed our mosaic art project. Our journey began in Ancient Rome, exploring the stunning mosaics from the House of the Faun and linking them to our Geography learning about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. The children were fascinated by how art can help us understand life in the past.
Inspired by these ancient designs, the children sketched a range of sea creatures, experimenting with shape, pattern and movement before choosing one to develop further. Using gridded paper, they carefully drew their chosen creature and used watercolours to mix beautiful shades. With thin brushes, they added delicate details that brought their artwork to life.
Once dry, the real magic began. The children cut their paintings into small pieces and reassembled them to create their own mosaic-style artwork. They then had the chance to work with real tiles to produce a second mosaic, exploring texture and pattern in a completely different way.
We are incredibly proud of their creativity, focus and enthusiasm. Their finished pieces are thoughtful and full of personality — a wonderful celebration of art, history and imagination.
