Black History Month Assembly
Date: 20th Oct 2026 @ 8:36am
Our Black History Month assembly, delivered by Mr Coogan, was both fascinating and inspiring. He began by explaining the importance of Black History Month and why it is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements, contributions and stories of black people throughout history. We then learned about Septimius Severus, a Roman Emperor of African heritage, and discovered that the Romans were far less concerned about a person's skin colour than many people might expect today. This challenged our thinking and helped us understand how diverse the Roman Empire really was.
The assembly also introduced us to Henry Box Brown, whose remarkable story has a local connection. To help us understand the conditions he endured, a student even climbed into a box similar to the one Henry travelled in during his journey to freedom. Seeing this brought his experiences to life and made a lasting impression on everyone. The assembly was incredibly thought-provoking and has inspired our whole school. Over the coming weeks, each class will research and present a black hero to the rest of the school, helping us to celebrate even more inspiring individuals and their achievements.
