Homework at Mount Carmel

Aims

  • To give children additional time to practise, consolidate and apply the skills they learn in school.
  • Extend and support the learning experiences in school via reinforcement and revision.
  • Enable parents and carers to share in their child’s education in partnership with the school.
  • Provide progression towards independence and individual responsibility in upper Key Stage 2 to prepare the children for High School.

Responsibilities

School is responsible for setting and monitoring homework appropriate to the child’s age and ability.

Parents and Carers are responsible for providing their child with encouragement, time and support with any homework including hearing their child read.

Pupils are responsible for undertaking any homework set and remembering to take home and return to school all books and equipment needed.

Reading

The importance of reading at home cannot be overemphasised and we hope that children will read for pleasure in their own time. All pupils will be provided with a suitable school reading book from Reception, which can be taken home to read with a parent or another adult. A record book will be provided for parents to sign when they have listened to their child. We aim for children in the Infant Department to read for 10 minutes every day and children in the Junior Department should read for at least 20 minutes daily. The development of children’s reading skills and the promotion of the love of reading for pleasure has the greatest impact on raising pupil achievement.

Comprehension activities are sent home weekly for pupils in Year 6.

Spellings

Spellings are also an essential component of homework. Spellings need to be learned thoroughly and used consistency in independent work to ensure retention and accuracy. Children will be taught spellings in class and then spelling list will be taken home for children to practice and learn. Spellings will be given out weekly for Y1- Y6. Sometimes children will be asked to write their spelling list into sentences as part of their spelling homework.

Times Tables

The quick recall of multiplication and division facts is essential for all children. The ability to recall these facts quickly enables children to answer related questions with ease. From Year 2, children will be given a Times Table Rockstars (TTRS) account. Homework will be set on this account weekly and children should spend around 20 minutes a week in short bursts accessing the games and consolidating their times table knowledge.

Maths Homework

Maths homework will be set weekly for Years 1- 6. The aim of this homework is to consolidate and reinforce learning that has already taken place in class. Maths homework will be sent out weekly and a familiar routine of when homework is set and returned will be made clear on the school website/ class page.
